Choosing The Right Metal Detector

Choosing a metal detector depends upon a lot of factors that you must consider before buying. Some of these factors are:

Cost - This is very important, if you cannot spend over $179 on a metal detector, then I say don't bother buying one, if you really want to go detecting more than once and for different items. Those $69 and $179 detectors you see in local stores or flyers, are really toys. They use the cheaper BFO technology that cannot discrimate junk from gold at all, and are very poor when used in any area that has a lot of iron in the soil or salt-water areas.

I have used probably 4 of these types of metal detectors throughout my life, and I can tell you one thing, there great for exercise, because they will have you digging constantly. You will find tons of stuff, oh yes, things like pull-tabs, old rusty soda cans, pieces of gum foil, aluminum foil pieces, junk metal, rusty bolts, nails, washers and an occasional penny.

Technology VS Items Wanting To Find - After reading about how the 3 different types of Metal Detector technologies work and differ from each other, you must decide how will you be using your metal detector most of the time. Will you be hunting for small objects like coins, or searching for a large cache or object. Will you be searching in salt-water or heavily metalic soil. Or will you be searchng shallow creeks and streams for gold nuggets. The things you may want to use your detector for, play one of the most important factors besides pricing.

So write down and think of what you will be detecting for most of the time, then find the detector technology you will need. You can find this info in our page titled: 'How Do Metal Detectors Work'.

Weight - How long will you be using the detector at times ? If you plan on using it in spurts of say 5 minutes it could be quite heavy, if you wan to swing it back and forth for an hour, you better have arms like a weight lifter or get one that weighs as little as possible, some models are as light as 2 lbs, while some weigh closer to 10 lbs. It does'nt take very long for 5 lbs to start getting heavy when swinging it back and forth, remember most of the time you will be moving the detector more than you would a week wacker, and you know how heavy they can get while using.

Dealer or Local Mall - I think when buying a metal detector, your a lot better off buying one from a dealer who has a large selection, and really knows what he is selling. Some of the better dealers even have a search area, where you can try the detectors, and see how they work when searching for coins etc. See also what return policies and guarantees the store or dealer has. Can you return the detector anytime later, with good credit towards a more expensive model, or can you try it for a month and bring it back if your not happy.
